PHYSIOSOUTH presents
21st Century Gluteal Training Workshop
Pioneer Sports and Recreation Centre
75 Lyttelton Street 24/25th September 10am – 5pm
With Bret Contreras-AUT University, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Course cost $120 this includes light morning and afternoon tea and course handouts
Is it possible to test the strength of posterior gluteus medius in isolation?" "Are squats the best way to strengthen the gluteal muscles?" “What makes the gluteus maximus the powerhouse of the human body?” “What are the reasons behind valgus collapse?” “What are the roles of each subdivision of each gluteal muscles?” “Are open-chain exercises worthwhile?” “Can low load activation exercises increase power production?” “Which exercise maximizes gluteus maximus activation?” “Why is the gluteus maximus a walking paradox?” “How do the muscle moment arms of the hip extensors and hip rotators change as the hip moves into flexion?”
Gluteal muscle weakness is a common contributor to much pathology such as low back pain, patellofemoral pain, anterior hip pain, SI joint pain, ITBS, hamstring and groin strains, and even sciatica in some cases. This workshop will present the latest research on anatomy, biomechanics and strength training techniques for gluteal muscle activation and strengthening to improve patient strength, function and sporting performance. Material will be organised into systems that make learning and application easier. Interwoven into the workshop will be plenty of videos and hands-on practical work so clinicians can leave the workshop equipped with the skills to implement their new knowledge immediately.

Bret Contreras has a master's degree from Arizona State University and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certificate from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Strength and Conditioning at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand. Bret writes for many popular magazines and websites including Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Oxygen Magazine, TNation, Elitefts, StrengthCoach, and Wannabebig and maintains a daily blog at BretContreras.com.
This workshop will cover the following topics
- Update on anatomy/biomechanics
- Adverse consequences of gluteal deactivation/weakness (development of pain/pathology, reduced sporting performance etc).
- How to assess gluteal function (activation/weakness)
- How to strengthen the muscle group and address gluteal imbalances
- Implications/relevance to the kinetic chain/function/performance
- The roles of the gluteus maximus in pain/injury prevention (7), every day functional activity (6), sports performance (14).
- Research-based evidence on gluteal activation in physiotherapeutic, sport, resistance and cardiovascular exercise.
- Debunking common gluteal myths
- Evidence based gluteal activation building techniques, adaptive shortening, reciprocal inhibition, gluteal amnesia, and synergistic dominance
- Practical and video demonstrations of the ten categories of gluteal exercise and the six categories of hip extension exercise
- Exercise continuums for all basic lower body movement patterns involving the gluteus maximus, from the simplest and most basic to the most advanced variations to increase gluteal activation
- Form cues for critical gluteal strengthening exercises
- Regions of accentuated force, transfer of training, hip torque and forces in sprinting and jumping
- Program design implications and practical tips
