Patients who require orthopaedic and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and who cannot afford to pay for private care, may be referred to a private physiotherapy clinic for a funded package of care via their general practice team.

Canterbury DHB & Physiosouth Working Together

This funding provides the flexibility of up to 4 visits and can cover some material costs (ie. strapping, theraband). On your first visit, our physiotherapist will take a detailed history and perform a physical examination to develop a working diagnosis. Together we will formulate a treatment plan aimed to resolve your immediate issues and directed towards achieving the agreed short and long-term goals.

The treatment plan will vary depending on your individual goals that are centred around mobility, stability and strength activities that can be done at home. We have access to Christchurch’s best gym and pool facilities giving us a huge scope to help you achieve your goals. Follow-up appointments involve re-assessing and measuring the agreed plan of activities, then modifying and/or progressing tasks depending on their feedback.

You may be eligible if you meet the following criteria:

  • Have chronic conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system (other than the forearm and hand) which significantly impair daily activities, work, or community participation, and are not covered by ACC
  • Hold a Community Services Card and could not otherwise afford physiotherapy, and all other funding options have been exhausted by your GP and their team
  • Ready and able to engage in the therapeutic process with a high level of commitment and self-motivation, and have realistic expectations for intervention
  • Have the potential to benefit from a short course of physiotherapy intervention

If you feel you meet the above criteria, contact your GP to see if this funded service is appropriate for you.
